Mayoral candidate John C. Welch reacts to Whole Foods planning suspension

PITTSBURGH, March 30, 2017 – The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today reported Whole Foods is backing out of its plans for a redevelopment at the former Penn Plaza site in East Liberty. Welch, whose campaign headquarters is in the heart of the East End, reacted positively to the news.

"I commend the decision of Whole Foods to suspend its plans to develop at the site of Penn Plaza, a controversial project from the start,” said Welch. “This is a huge boost for the confidence of residents and advocacy groups who resisted the act of displacement of low income residents with the replacement of a market rate development, but the damage has already been done to the lives of those who have been displaced.”

“The ability of communities within East Liberty and outside to come together for such a just cause should serve as a model of power for others caught in the margins, and a message of caution to those who continue to force their agendas without the input of the communities they encroach," he said.
